Ancient Memory | Surreal Sci-Fi Archaeological Wall Art

An archaeological curiosity from a civilisation that apparently took its entertainment rather seriously.

Recovered from an uncertain period of mechanical antiquity, this remarkable image depicts two elaborately constructed figures engaged in what scholars initially believed to be an ancient ritual of considerable importance.

The seated figures, their intricate mechanical bodies rendered in the familiar language of classical antiquity, appear absorbed in a contest involving a small circular device.

Early interpretations suggested celestial navigation, mathematical prophecy or perhaps communication with forgotten gods.

Further examination revealed something considerably less profound.

A sequence of coloured lights.

A test of memory.

And two ancient machines apparently determined to outdo one another.

Whether the game was invented for their amusement, or whether an entire civilisation was constructed merely to play it, remains a matter of some archaeological disagreement.
